Is my turbo working?

Recently purchase a 1993 F350 7.3L Diesel with Banks Sidewinder Turbo, 3" exhaust pipes with a Banks muffler.

It sounded sweet when I gave her or released fuel; had a nice whistling to it. But shortly after I got it, I opened the black aluminum box that sites on top of the intake manifold and discovered the air breather and it was about 80 to 90% plugged with crap; god know how it even ran. I cleaned it but now I can't hear any whistling so how do I know if the turbo is working? :dunno: I miss the whistling sound. :( LOL

you need to install a pyrometer and a boost gauge, the pyro will keep u from roasting the turbo, and the boost gauge will tell you if it is "working"

I forgot to mention that the Banks exhaust gauge shows the exhaust temp fluctuates between 500 to 600 and the manifold pressure gauge fluctuates between 1 & 2.

Hmmm, I'll check for leaks but it had the same pressure before I did the cleaning and had the whistling sound. Is it normal for the whistling to go away when there's a good air intake supply?

i will say on mine, bone stock trim with my 01 7.3 is around 13-15psi under load. i can get one or two psi with just rev'v the motor at a standstill, engine has no load.

with the whistling sound, i 2nd what ned 37 says, it was probably the air found a way to work into the motor becuase the filter was plugged, kinda like sucking on a straw with a pinhole in it.

Check your intercooler boots for tears/holes

Double and triple check the seals for the air intake, that is the MOST important, you do NOT want to have dust getting into these motors to ANY degree.

3rd...stay away from K&N.(VERY poor sealing)

Hope i helped a bit

I'll check it all out this week. I just bought a new Banks filter and I noticed it's made by K&N :6: LOL

you guys are talking about two different trucks. the banks on an idi, which your 93 is, should make about 7-8 psi of boost under a load. 1-2 psi unloaded or at cruising highway speeds. also, unless someone added an intercooler, your 93 does not have one. i did not see one listed in your sig. the turbo should go right into the intake hat. the 7.3 in his 01 is a different motor. it was built for a turbo and should be putting out boost in the 20's. and they came intercooled from the factory. your egts look good, so your turbo is at least somewhat working. anyway, hook up to a trailer with some weight on it and find a hill. give her hell and see what the boost and egt gauges read.

Thanks for the info zpd307.

Question, the new Bank air breather filter shows to oil it before installation........ I just oil the rubber seal on both sides so it seals properly in the housing? Just motor oil and just oil the surface like I would do with an oil filter?

I could almost bet money that it's normal for the turbo to whistle or am I wrong? According to a different thread I started a while back... check here -->

if it is a k&n, it should all ready be pre oiled. the oil is dyed red so you know where it has been sprayed. if it is not oiled, the cotton, or what ever the material is, should be white/ gray. banks uses k&n filters for their system, but i had read there is not a k&n part number for it. so you would have to go through banks to get it. so.... maybe banks does not have it pre oiled. k&n filters have a recharge system, so you can clean and reuse the filter. it comes with a spray soap and spray oil. if you half to oil it, spray along each pleat lightly and wait 10-15 minutes for it all to soak in. then you can see where you missed. you do not want oil dripping off it but you want it to be a solid red. if anything, using a grease around the rubber edges will help seal the seal, if you get what i mean. it is a little extra insurance that nothing is getting around the rubber seal. i have been using k&n's for a while so if you have any questions, let me know.

to answer your other question about turbo whistle, it is mainly determined by you exhaust. a system w/o a muffler will let the turbo whistle a lot, i should not say let it whistle, you will hear the whistle a lot more. a performance muffler will let some whistle out. a normal quiet muffler will make it hard too hear the whistle. these motors were not made to be turbo'd, as in the compression ratio is really high compared to the newer diesels which were designed to have a turbo. the idi's have around 21.5:1 ratio, where the newer powerstrokes only have around 18.0:1. they rely heavily on boost to make power and can handle to 20+ pounds of boost. out idi motors can only handle up to around 12 pounds safely. after that, the head gaskets can not keep that much pressure contained. boost is made by fuel in our diesels. so the more you put your foot into it, the more boost is made. so just driving around town, you will not see high boost numbers. you will only see higher bosst number when you are really getting on it or hauling a load. clear as mud yet.

I think the 6.9 isn't quite big enough cubic inch wise to make the same amount of boost out of a Banks turbo system as the 7.3 IDI. I have similar results to you...1-2 pounds of boost running down the road, only 3-4 when i'm loaded uphill.

It's true about the Banks K&N filter that isn't sold from anyone except Banks...grr.

I can hear mine whistle some, but it's not extreme.

Thanks for the info guys; I feel better hearing this info. I'm planning on running 4" straight pipe soon with no muffler.

Here's the new Banks (K&N) filter as is out of the box. All I have to do is apply a light film of oil with my finger on the black surface for a better seal? All else is ok, right?

Thanks again gents!

yep, that's the color of a preoiled, ready to go air filter. when you get a recharge kit, that is what color you want it to be when you re oil it. i would use grease around the rubber, i dont think oil would stay where it should to be effective. i dont think what kind of grease matters. but someone might have a different opinion.

arthur, do you have an egt probe. what are you running for egts loaded up a grade. you might have room to turn up the fuel a little more which would raise your boost numbers. did you turn it up the banks recommended 1/4 turn of the fuel screw.

All else is ok, right?
Rather than ask here, I'd HIGHLY advise you to go to the K&N website and read their detailed instructions on how to correctly oil and service their filter before installation. Improperly oiled, or using the wrong oil, is like using no filter at all. They do a terrific job of filtering if used correctly.

I phoned Banks and they told me it's ready to install as is just like you mentioned zpd307.

Thanks all

I have a 92 with a Banks system. I get about 11/12 pulling a load up a hill. I have a redline on my pyrometer set at 1050 (recommended by Banks). If my wastegate sticks it will peg the needle which it does sometimes when it has been sitting up for awhile. I have the K&N filter on mine also. I also have the Banks exhaust and I don't hear any whistle. I turned my pump up a quarter of a turn when I had the turbo installed 16 years ago when diesel was like a dollar a gallon. I really need to turn it back down now because I hardly ever pull a load anymore. I forgot where the place is on the pump to turn it down and I looked in my manual and I don't see where in there either but I know its in there somewhere ... I know it pulls like hell when things are perkin' ....

With the old filter, the RPMs @ 100 km/h (62 mph) was approx. 1900 rpm. I installed the filter last night and now the rpm is @ 2300 at the same speed... what the heck?
